Welcome Letter

Dear Parents & Students:

I am very excited to be your scholar’s Language Arts teacher for the 2017-2018 school year here at A. W. Brown Leadership Academy.  We are a school that’s committed to excellence in everything we do.  Our mission is to produce S.E.E.D.S. (smart, effective, efficient, disciplined students), by creating an environment in which teachers feel safe and free to teach and students feel safe and motivated to learn.  Please read our class syllabus and pay close attention to the contents of each section, save this handout for future reference, fill out the last page including the necessary signatures, and return it to me as soon as possible.

Thank you

Maria McGee Lockett

As I teach, we will be reading in class constantly. It is important that students also read outside of school.  I recommend reading 30-40 min per day.  Find a comfortable place with good lighting where there are few, if any, distractions from television, loud music, even your cell phone. The local public library or our classroom library are great places to pick up something good to read. When you’re done, take a few minutes to write a reflection about what you read in your composition book, how it makes you feel, something it reminds you of, or how it connects to your life.  Add an illustration to show the connection. Writing about what you read (reflecting) is a great way to connect with the story, expand your horizons, and build your vocabulary.
