My name is Mrs. Mechelle Matthews. I am delighted to be the new the K-5 school counselor for the Quest Campus at A.W. Brown Leadership Academies.
Born and raised in Tyler, TX, I relocated to the Dallas area approximately ten years ago. I received my bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University in College Station and my master’s degree from the University of Texas at Tyler. I earned my counseling certification through the University of Texas at Arlington. I have served at many levels within the educational spectrum from elementary to higher education. I have taught 2nd, 5th and 8th grades. Additionally, I spent 4 years in high school working as an Academic Advisor/Senior Counselor. This will be my 25th year in education and my eighth year with the A.W. Brown school district.
I am super excited about my new role and look forward to working collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents, the community and all students to promote their academic, personal and social success. I believe in a holistic, solution-focused approach to encourage and empower our scholars to achieve and perform at optimal levels in every area of their lives.
It’s going to be a great year and I can’t wait to begin working with our scholars and all members of our learning community!
My name is Mrs. Kendrah Rougeau. My husband and our 13-year-old daughter have lived in Dallas for the past 14 years. I am happy to introduce myself as the counselor at A. W. Brown Leadership Academy's Genesis Campus (PreK-5).
I am a native of Memphis, Tennessee. I received a dual Bachelor's Degree in Education and History from LeMoyne-Owen college, a private historical black college/university (HBCU) in Memphis. I spent years of my teaching career in Tennessee, Ohio, and Texas. I have taught kindergarten, third, fourth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. I enjoyed the experience of teaching different levels; however, teaching History to twelfth graders was my absolute favorite.
I received my Master's of Education in School Counseling from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. In Columbus, Ohio, I developed the counseling program for several charter schools. I was also given the privilege to teach and mentor an Upward Bound program at Columbus State Community College for incoming freshman.
I am enjoying my role in encouraging all scholars to strive for their personal best. I work with scholars individually, in-group settings, and in the classroom. I will visit K-5 classrooms to do a classroom guidance lesson. All guidance lessons will be focused on academic, career & personal/social development of all scholars. I will be running several small groups throughout the year for helping selected students to discuss specific concerns (anger management, loss of a loved one, divorce, etc.).
There are no typical days as a school counselor, and never a dull moment! I am thrilled to be working with the scholars, administrators, staff, and parents whom I so highly regard. Please do not hesitate to contact me to talk, to listen, and/or to assist. I wish everyone a great 2017-2018 school year!
